Frustratingly as an Australian, it's virtually impossible to travel abroad without heading to the airport and jumping on a plane. However, flight-free travel becomes a whole lot easier once you make it overseas. So when my partner and I decided to take a career break and set our sights on far away lands we agreed that we would try to do it as sustainably, and with as little air travel, as possible (while considering our budget, time constraints and the current political climates around the world)

In January we packed up our apartment on the NSW Central Coast, north of Sydney, and put our lives into a backpack. We opted to fly from Sydney into Denpasar, Bali, as the most economic and shortest flight option to start our SE Asia journey. We will make our way westward, through Java, onto Sumatra and finally mainland Malaysia. From there, the ease of trains and more reliable public transport options should make our flight-free SE Asia journey much more achievable.

I will be sharing our experiences and tips along the way for those who might be interested in trying something similar. I hope you enjoy!
